'Philanthropy, Patronage, and Civil Society'
A new book, edited by Thomas Adam, Assistant Professor of German and Transatlantic European History at the University of Texas at Arlington, explores the modern development of philanthropy in a transatlantic context. Experiences from Germany, Great Britain and North America are explored in a set of case studies. The comparative method of the essays also reveals the extent to which the wealthy classes on both sides of the Atlantic defined themselves through their philanthropic activities.
'The Future of Philanthropy: Economics, Ethics and Management'
"Social stability across the globe requires the mobilization of human and technological resources at levels far beyond the capacity and will of governments. As we all struggle with a new definition of social solidarity, smart philanthropy, emotionally energized philanthropy, and even entrepreneurial philanthropy is now more important than ever before. The private sector needs to continue to step up to the challenge in America , but also in other developed economies. Raymond's insights can help frame the discussion on how best to accomplish a new form of collaboration among public and private agents for social good in America, but perhaps also across the globe..." 'Volunteering for All? Exploring the link between volunteering and social exclusion'
This report draws on findings from all stages of a three-year research project carried out by the Institute for Volunteering Research. It uses the experiences of individuals and organisations to show some of the barriers that prevent people from volunteering, how these barriers can be overcome and how people have benefited from their involvement. In doing so it hopes to answer the demand made by many of the people involved in the research not for "another good practice guide", but for a chance to hear about other people's experiences, practices, and ideas. It also draws out implications for practitioners, policymakers and researchers.

The Sustainable Nonprofit - Built to Last and Good to Great
In this article Cheryl Gidley examines the questions: Why do some nonprofits endure and grow despite downturns in the economy? What do large, "corporate" nonprofits have that smaller organizations do not? Why, with all the business books on the best-seller lists, aren't more people using that knowledge to help nonprofits? "Built to last" foundations are also discussed, with the example of the Chicago-based Sara Lee Foundation, which runs intensive "built to last" management workshops for nonprofits.
