Chronicle of Philanthropy Ranks 2003 Top Gifts by Individuals
Joan B. Kroc, the widow of McDonald's Corporation founder Ray Kroc, dominates the Chronicle of Philanthropy's list of the biggest donations in 2003 by individuals with four bequests totaling $360 million. Irwin Jacobs, CEO of wireless communications company Qualcomm, and his wife Joan gave the second-largest gift: a $110 pledge to the engineering school at the University of California, San Diego. Rounding out the top five, Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen pledged $100 million to create a research center that will map the mouse brain, philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad gave $100 million to establish a biomedical institute, and former eBay president Jeffrey S. Skoll added $72 million to the endowment of his foundation. The gifts on the list were smaller compared with those from recent years, providing further evidence of the lackluster economy.

The "New Look" of Major Giving
The typical major gift was a one-time "sacrificial" contribution from an older donor near the end of his or her life. It was usually directed to a charity's capital needs. However, current concerns about outliving one's assets suggest that there will be an increasing reluctance to part with assets until one's death. Economic and demographic changes are forcing pre-retirees and young retirees to reevaluate how they're going to fund "the golden years". While there are still a number of older individuals who wait until close to the end of their life to make a grand gesture, many mid-life and younger persons are able and willing to join the party if we redefine what gets them in!
The "new look" in major giving includes:
· Larger annual gifts made from the donor's income as opposed to his/her assets.
· Committed giving over a period of months, years, decades.
· Special gifts throughout life when lifestage changes provide opportunities.
