ACCESS Initiative to provide accountability tools for civil society
In a recent article for Ethical Corporation magazine, Simon Zadek, Chief Executive of AccountAbility, analyses the discussions on NGO accountability. He also reports on the ACCESS Initiative, which aims to provide not only a range of accountability tools for civil society, but also to provide an active forum for debating the challenges of NGO accountability.

New Johns Hopkins handbook to put a value on volunteer effort
Following field tests in 11 countries, the Handbook on Nonprofit Institutions in the System of National Accounts has been prepared by Johns Hopkins University in cooperation with the United Nations Statistics Division, and has been submitted to the UN for editing and final publication. The new handbook calls for national statistical agencies to bring together data on nonprofit institutions in a satellite account and to put a value on the volunteer effort that these organisations often generate. Using the new reporting tools outlined, countries can better define the size, scope and activities of their nonprofit sector. The handbook and test reports can be downloaded from:
