Buse Commission launches first stage of consultation: The Future of the Self-Regulation of Charity Fundraising
An independent UK commission, led by Rodney Buse, Vice-Chairman of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, has now launched its phase 1 report. The Buse Commission was commissioned by the Institute of Fundraising to develop plans for a new body to regulate charity fundraising in the UK. The consultation document sets out the framework for the consultation and asks the questions necessary to inform the proposals for the development of the new, independent body. The first report, a scoping study, was published on 22 August 2003. Consultation is open to anyone, particularly members of the public, volunteers and voluntary organisations throughout the UK. Experience of the subject outside of the UK is also welcome. The initial consultation period ends on 16 November 2003. German Association for Integrated Healthcare founded in Berlin (DGIV/Deutsche Gesellschaft für integrierte Versorgung e.V. i. Gr.)
On 26 September over 100 interested parties met in Berlin to found the DGIV. The recent developments in the German health care system have made it necessary to create a lobby and an organised exchange of experiences for institutions concerned with integrated health care. The main initiator of the DGIV is EUConsult member contec GmbH.

International Civil Society Assessment & Strengthening Project - Call for expressions of interest
CIVICUS, a global alliance of civil society organisations, is inviting applications for national partners to implement the CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI) 2003-04. The CSI is an action-research project that assesses the state of civil society in countries around the world with a view to creating a knowledge base and an impetus for civil society strengthening initiatives. The CSI was successfully piloted in 14 countries around the world and CIVICUS has launched the first full implementation phase in approximately 50 countries. The CSI will be implemented by civil society organizations at the country level, in close partnership with CIVICUS. Round 3 applications are presently being accepted. Charity finance conference to discuss the future of third sector
A one-day conference organised by the UK's Guardian newspaper will discuss the future of charity investment strategy. Taking place in London on 2 October, topics ranging from the global economy to day-to-day charity management will be covered, set in the context of a new regulatory framework for the UK voluntary sector.
Johns Hopkins International Fellows in Philanthropy Program
The Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies, Center for Civil Society Studies is calling for applications for the International Fellows in Philanthropy Program for the 2004-2005 academic year. This programme, based in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, affords an opportunity for advanced study, research, and training for up to eight participants each year who are involved in studying or managing private nonprofit, or philanthropic organisations outside of the United States, or working as NGO liaisons in the public or commercial sectors. Fellowships, which can be an academic year or semester, are available at both the Junior and Senior level. Special funding is available for Fellows from East Africa and for Fellows conducting research on Community Foundations.

Museum volunteers get the message: Ifu think trAns R ZzZz thnk x2
The UK's National Railway Museum has been countering a crisis of 'gradually greying' volunteers. Its campaign, which has also seen the museum proudly register three new text-words with the Oxford English Dictionary (trAns, r@lwZ, vlntrs) is the first response by a major institution to a shortfall in young volunteers reported in a nationwide survey by Resource, the national museums council.

New course for fundraisers at the University of Winterthur
The Swiss Association of Fundraisers has concluded an agreement with the University of Winterthur to offer a new course for fundraisers. The course will be based on the German models which have been run very successfully by the Deutsche Fundraising-Akademie, but will be adapted to Swiss requirements and be run by Swiss teachers. Barbara Crole, Vice President of the Swiss Association and member of EUConsult, has taken a leading role in seeing the project through.

Death of Judith O'Connor, former president and CEO of BoardSource in Washington, USA
Judith O'Conner died of cancer on 1 September. During her six-year tenure at BoardSource, formerly known as the National Center for Nonprofit Boards, she helped launch an effort to find new ideas and practices for nonprofit board governance, and was named one of the 50 most influential nonprofit leaders by The NonProfit Times in 2000, 2001 and 2002.

Schwab Foundation selects outstanding social entrepreneurs
The Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship in Geneva has announced the world's 'Outstanding Social Entrepreneurs' for 2004. The founder and the current president of the US-based TechnoServe, a nonprofit international development organization, and Dr Victoria Hale, founder of OneWorld Health, a nonprofit pharmaceutical company, are among those named.
