Charity Reform - UK government strategy unit report on review of charity law: Private Action, Public Benefit
The 97-page report, Private Action, Public Benefit, published on 25 September 2002, is a review of charities and the wider not-for-profit sector containing 61 recommendations, some of which will have to be implemented by law.

Friendly take-over of Krefeld-based consultants CULTURPLAN by Austrian ICG Infora Consulting Group
After many years of successful cooperation between the two companies, ICG Infora now holds a 51% stake in CULTURPLAN. European cultural institutions, public administration and private management will be served by 50 staff members based in Krefeld, Berlin, Munich, Graz, Vienna and Budapest. A group turnover of over €5 million is planned.

Latest UK Charity Commission guidelines on requirements for charitable status of museums and art galleries
Published in August 2002, this publication sets out new guidance on the charitable status of museums and art galleries and how their collections and exhibits can satisfy a criterion of merit.

First ever report on US community foundations donor-advised funds released
A new survey, A Flexible and Growing Service to Donors: Donor-Advised Funds in Community Foundations, published by the US Council on Foundations, reports the total value of gifts received in 2001 by 188 responding foundations was US$1.45 billion, and grants from the funds totalled US$695.4 million.

Chief executives' pay survey 2002 - details on charity sector salaries
The salary levels of the UK's top charity executives have been revealed in a new survey. The survey provides a list of the UK's top 100 charities, naming the chief executives, and detailing each charity's total income, the salary level in GBP and the amount spent on the CE's salary for each GBP1,000 of income. Other sectors such as health and housing associations are also investigated and lists of top earners in the private sector and for high profile leaders not falling into the survey categories provide useful comparisons.

CAF, AOL Time Warner Foundation and AOL UK name giving portal
A new web site for online, tax-effective giving and fundraising in the UK has been launched by the Charities Aid Foundation and its partners. http://www.givenow.org/ will enable any UK charity to offer online donation facilities and provide news to potential donors.

Direct marketing success in Europe for US charities
US charities are successfully using the same techniques used in the USA to raise funds and awareness among European donors.

Charity Finance - New UK bank account to benefit charities
Tridos Bank's Charity Saver account will allow savers to target a proportion of the interest earned to a charity of their choice. The account is part of the "Take Control" campaign backed by Amnesty International and Oxfam, which encourages customers to use their investments to make a positive contribution to society.

Outsourcing offers new possibilities for charity efficiency

Transatlantic Community Foundation Network (TCFN)
The Bertelsmann and Charles Stewart Mott Foundations are continuing their support of exchange between community foundations in Europe and North America by investing over €1 million in the TCFN, which was established in 1999. The Network has accepted a further 12 new community foundations, with a total of 46 foundations in 14 countries now belonging to the programme.
Great Britain has the highest number of community foundations in Europe (65) with Germany rapidly increasing its share (over 40 - all established in the last 6 years).
