  • Fundraising Consultants: A Guide for Nonprofit Organizations

This new publication is part of the AFP Fund Development Series. The following quotation is from Sandra Renner, MSW, CFRE, Renner Consulting:

"Finally, a book that provides a balanced and informative perspective about fundraising consulting. Gene provides solid information for organizations to consider when using a consultant while also describing the consultant's point of view. All this can only lead to a more effective use of consultants and more successful nonprofits."

  • Doing Good Well – new book on the nonprofit world

This book has been recommended by EUConsult Member Elizabeth Mills (thank you Elizabeth!). The book’s author Willie Cheng frames and explains the nonprofit world while providing fresh insights as to where and why it works - or not. The topics covered include:

  1. The structure of the marketplace - challenging whether a “marketplace” truly exists.
  2. Concepts of nonprofit management - disputing why charities must follow corporate mantras of growth and reserves accumulation.
  3. Philanthropy and volunteerism - questioning the motivations of givers.
  4. New social models of social enterprises, social entrepreneurship and venture philanthropy - seeking to explain why these may not have worked as intended.
  5. Nonprofit quirks - showing how the rules can result in the extension of the rich/poor divide into the charity world and make fundraising inefficient through an efficiency ratio.

  • New research on charities and beneficiaries

A new report published by the Charity Commission (England and Wales) - A Balancing Act: new perspectives on the charity/beneficiary relationship - examines the charity/beneficiary relationship from the perspectives of charities, the public and the public as charity beneficiaries. It includes thoughts on the implications of the research for the sector, wider society and for the Commission itself.

  • Model board paper on recession issues

The Charity Commission (England and Wales) is to produce a checklist of issues that trustees of smaller charities ought to be considering to help ensure their organisation survives the recession. The checklist will be presented in the format of an interactive model board paper and the Commission hopes it will be available to download from its website within a few weeks.  A draft is expected to be presented to the next Commission board meeting in May. The checklist was prompted by the Commission’s second Economic Survey of  Charities, which demonstrated that smaller organisations were the most likely to need specialist advice and support during the downturn. The paper will address three broad areas that trustees should consider:

  1. Ensuring the charity remains a going concern
  2. Ensuring the charity’s governance is sound and robust
  3. Ensuring the charity makes effective use of its resources
