- Marita Haibach honoured by German President for her services to fundraising
Dr Marita Haibach, EUConsult Member (previously Secretary and Board Member) and independent consultant in major donor fundraising and strategic management, will be awarded one of the highest honours in Germany on 29 April. The Bundesverdienstkreuz, the Order of the Federal Republic of Germany, means that Marita Haibach’s contribution to the third sector is formally recognised and honoured by the German President. She has played a major part in increasing the societal importance and role of fundraising and philanthropy in Germany and across Europe. Marita has been Deputy Chair of the German Fundraising Association and was co-initiator of the Fundraising Akademie, as well as being an active volunteer for many organisations. As President of the European Fundraising Association, she was instrumental in the successful introduction of EFA Certification, the fundraising qualification recognised by fundraising associations across Europe.

- EUConsult Members can now get linkedin
Elizabeth Mills of Eminence Grise has set up a new Linkedin Group for EUConsult, with Daryl Upsall as the lead person. This will provide EUConsult Members with a great way of having a quick consultation on matters of general or particular concern. Elizabeth will shortly send invitations to Members, so that they can opt to join the group.

- DUCI opens nonprofit consulting presence in Shanghai
Daryl Upsall Consulting International (DUCI), has opened its operations in Shanghai, China, with the appointment of Sarah Bissell as Senior Consultant for the South East Asia Region. Daryl Upsall comments, “In recent years many international NGOs have contacted us regarding how they can evaluate the market for fundraising and in other cases how they can simply get stated with building a fundraising programme in China. Now with our opening in Shanghai and with someone with the knowledge and expertise of Sarah Bissell we can be confident that DUCI can meet these needs.” Sarah Bissell has over 10 years fundraising experience in China, Hong Kong and Europe with specific expertise in managing high profile events, corporate fundraising and strategic planning for small charities as well as major donor and individual giving. For the previous 3 years she worked as the Corporate Partnerships Manager at the British Red Cross.

- Jon Duschinsky’s first book published
John Duschinsky of bethechange consulting has just had his first book - Philanthropy in a Flat World: Inspiration Through Globalization - published by Wiley. - International Fundraising Consultancy starts First Friday Network
To help their clients in the recession, the IFC has started a free First Friday Fundraisers Network, meeting at The Hub Kings Cross on every first Friday afternoon of the month. An amazing variety of charities have been dropping in to seek solutions to their fundraising problems. For those who cannot come to the sessions IFC has just started a Facebook Group called First Friday Fundraisers. There are a couple of video interviews on there from happy participants.

- Joe McKenna gives workshops on surviving the recession
In partnership with the Wheel (www.wheel.ie), Joe McKenna is delivering a series of workshops aimed to help organisations deal with the effects of the global recession. The workshop entitled “Making more From Less” provides non-for-profit groups with the tools to analyse their own situation, explore strategies to cope with the recession and discover their personal leadership responsibilities. - Dr Marilyn Wyatt working with international school boards
Dr Marilyn Wyatt has been working with the boards of international schools in Luxembourg, Sri Lanka, Estonia, Latvia, Russia, Hungary, and Uzbekistan. Marilyn is also working with the Council of International Schools to redefine accreditation standards for international school boards. In addition, she is preparing a meeting sponsored by the U.S. Department of State for international school board members working at US embassies in Europe and has also been active as a board member of the Czech Fulbright Commission.
Marilyn’s article "Governance in a Borderless World" appeared in the March/April issue (volume 18, number 2) of Board Member.
Other activities include:
- Conducting a session on the challenges facing the boards of international organisations at the BoardSource Leadership Forum in October 2008
- Giving a presentation on US foundation governance at a meeting of Polish foundations organised by the Polish Donor's Forum in February 2009
- Speaking on accountability and governance at a conference in Lisbon organised by the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in May 2009

- Eminence Grise Associates investigating back pain
Eminence Grise Associates has recently been appointed to help the Trustees of DISCS to develop the charity. This medical research charity is committed to increasing our understanding of the underlying causes of low back pain, a problem which causes distress to so many people, and results in many lost working days.
Elizabeth Mills also runs the charity Homeshare International, and is working towards the first World Homeshare Congress to be held in Paris 3-5 July 2009. Fellow members of EUConsult have been helpful in providing introductions to speakers, and encouraging friends and colleagues to sign up. Anyone who is interested in intergenerational working, or care or housing solutions will be very welcome. Details are published in this issue of the Info Service under Sector News/Resources.
Other current work includes communications and fundraising consultancy for Bromley Autistic Trust; providing fundraising and communications advice, plus mentoring the Chair and Chief Executive of Age Concern Gloucestershire. Elizabeth has recently joined the Advisory committee for the Dipex Menopause project, gathering women’s experiences of the menopause to inform others, and produce a free website on the award-winning www.healthtalkonline.org
- O’Kennedy Consulting (OKC) forms strategic alliances
OKC has formed associations with:
- Kenneth Hoffman to draw on his expertise on Trust and Foundation support available from the United States. In May OKC will be holding a seminar for charities in Dublin where Kenneth will outline how and where to look for support from the US
- Finance One, an Irish Financial Management firm, to help charitable organisations manage their existing funds and ensure they get the best rates on their deposited funds during these financially challenging times
- Marcom Ireland who work with organisations on television campaigns, advertising and general media awareness strategies.
OKC has also formed an association with fellow EUConsult Member YTES, who specialise in obtaining European funding, adding details on YTES as an associate on the OKC website. A number of OKC clients are already using the services of the YTES team.
- Ramses Man speaks at major donor fundraising conference
EUConsult Board Member Ramses Man, who set up his own consultancy - Nassau - together with colleague Vera Perdeman at the end of 2008, presented at a major donor fundraising conference on 27 February. In his capacity as Chairman of the Dutch Fundraisers’ Association (NGF), he gave the welcome address and a session on the Dutch code of best practice for major donor fundraising.
- New book from Martin Beck
Martin Beck’s new book Einmaleins der Macht gives a personal view of positive leadership. It is slimline publication to dip into and give the reader some food for thought regarding their own leadership skills. It is available in German only.

- YTES seeks project partners
YTES would be pleased to hear from EUConsult Members or other potential partners who would be interested in collaborating on the following projects:
- An INTERREG IVC project, coordinated by ADITEC (www.aditec.org), promoting entrepreneurship in different EU regions. They already have English and French partners and seek to extend their partnership to new EU Member States;
- A pilot project under the Information and Communication Technologies Support Programme (ICT-PSP), which aims at implementing ICT for energy efficiency in social housing. YTES is setting up the pilot proposal (deadline 2 June 2009) and is actively seeking technological providers (mainly on smart metering technologies that could work in all EU Member states buildings, specialists in managing energy flows at local levels, etc.).
