  • European Commission report on giving for European research – EFC to lead development of of European Forum on Philanthropy

The creation of a European Forum on Philanthropy and Research, and the future adoption of a European Foundation Statute, as steps for strengthening the role of philanthropy in funding research, were among the key issues addressed at a conference on “Giving More for Research in Europe” held in Brussels on March 27th-28th 2006. EFC Chair Dan Brandstrom, Stiftelsen Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, announced that the EFC would take the lead in developing a European Forum on Philanthropy and research funding. Participants and other stakeholders are invited to express their interest in the initiative. The EFC Chair also outlined that work will continue to improve conditions for cross-border philanthropy, including through a European Foundation Statute. Enhanced cooperation between research stakeholders and shaping appropriate legal tools to support foundations cross-border work were two of the key issues explored in the report “Giving More for Research in Europe”, along with other measures and actions at national and European level to promote the role of philanthropy in supporting research activities. The report was commissioned by the European Commission from a group of independent experts in 2006. The findings of the report and its major proposals were presented and debated at the event.
